Share a file by link
Send a file to someone who doesn't use your portal — a client's accountant, opposing counsel, a supplier — with a link that expires. Anyone with the link can download the file without signing in, until it expires or you revoke it.
Create a link
- Open the client's Files tab and find the file.
- Click ⋯ on the file and choose Get link…
- Under The link works for, choose 1 day, 7 days or 30 days. Seven days is the default; links never last longer than 30.
- Click Create link. The link is copied for you. If your browser blocks that, click Copy.
- Paste it into an email or a message.

A link doesn't change who sees the file in the portal: an Internal file stays internal. There's no password on a link, so send it only to the person who needs it.
What the person sees
The link opens a page that says … shared a file with you, with the file's name, its size, Link works until and the date, and a Download button. The page tells them you can see when the file is downloaded.
When the link has expired or been revoked, the page says This link no longer works and asks them to get a new link from you.
See and revoke links
Open Get link… on the file again. Live links lists every link still working, with who made it, when it expires and how many times it's been downloaded. Copy copies a link again.
To stop a link working, click Revoke, then Revoke link. It stops at once.
Links also stop working on their own when:
- the file is deleted (restoring the file doesn't bring them back),
- the file's project moves to another client, or
- your workspace is no longer on a plan with client files. They work again if the plan comes back. See Client files and your plan.
Who can make links
Admins and the Owner (shown as Portal admin in the app for now) can create links to any file, and revoke any link. Links can't be made on an archived client's files, but existing ones can still be revoked.
What's logged
The file's Access log records Link created, Link revoked, and each Downloaded by link with the downloader's IP address. Opening the page alone isn't logged or counted; only the download is. See Deleted files and the access log.
