Start and stop a timer
Go to Track in the sidebar. The bar at the top is the timer.
- Type what you're working on in What are you working on? (optional).
- Click the project button and pick a project (optional).
- Click Start.
The clock starts counting and Start turns into Stop. Click Stop when you're done. The entry lands in the day's list below. To see the whole week instead, see Day and week views.

Good to know
- Nothing is required. You can press Start on an empty bar and fill in the description and project later, while it runs or after. If your workspace has Require a project on every entry switched on, the project button reads Choose a project and you must pick one before starting.
- Press Enter to start. With the cursor in the description, Enter starts the timer.
- Edit while it runs. While the timer is running, the bar edits the running entry. Change the description or the project and it saves straight away.
- One timer at a time. Starting a new timer (from anywhere) stops the one that's running.
- It follows you. The running timer shows in the header on every page, with its description, the clock and a stop button. It stays in step across tabs and devices.
- A timer stays on the day it started. One started late last night and stopped this morning is filed under yesterday.
- Nothing written on it? When you stop a timer with no description, Timebun puts your cursor in that entry's description so you can say what it was.
Choosing a project
The project button opens a menu with your Recent projects first, then your Clients. Click a client to see its projects. Type in Search clients and projects… to find one quickly. See Time without a project for the other choices in that menu.
Start and stop from anywhere
- Header: when no timer is running, Start timer in the header takes you to Track. When one is running, click the square to stop it.
- Keyboard: press Shift N (⇧N on a Mac) anywhere outside a text field to start or stop the timer. A timer started this way has no project; if your workspace requires one, Timebun asks you to pick it first.
- Search: press ⌘K (Ctrl K on Windows) and choose Start timer or Stop timer.
On a phone
The bar takes two rows: the description on top, then the project, the clock and Start. Everything else works the same. The keyboard shortcut isn't offered on touch screens.
Pick up where you left off
Each entry in the list has a play button. It starts a new timer with the same description, project and billable setting. When your workspace tracks time by duration, an entry from today resumes in place instead, adding to the same entry. On a phone the button reads Resume or Start again so you know which it will do.
