Keep a client's card on file

With a card on file, you can start a plan for a client straight away with Charge card on file instead of sending them a payment request each time. Renewals are charged to the same card.

The cards live on the client page, Overview tab, in the Payment methods card. You need Stripe connected first — see Connect your Stripe account.

Ask the client for a card

You never type a client's card number into Timebun. You send them a link, and they enter it on Stripe's own page.

  1. On the client's Overview tab, click Add a card in Payment methods.
  2. Click Copy and send the link to the client, by email or however you usually reach them.
  3. The client enters their card on Stripe. They then see Card saved and "You can close this window."

Stripe's page offers the ways to pay that are turned on in your Stripe account, so it may offer more than a card. See Stripe's Dynamic payment methods.

The link works for about a day. If it runs out before they use it, click Add a card again for a new one. If the client leaves the Stripe page without finishing, nothing is saved and the same link still works.

The card appears in Payment methods once Stripe confirms it, usually within a few seconds. A newly saved card becomes the client's Default, so their next renewal is charged to it.

Choose the default card

Renewals and Charge card on file always use the card marked Default. To switch, click Make default next to another card.

Remove a card

Click Remove, then Remove card. The card is taken off the client's account in Stripe.

Timebun won't remove a card that a running plan still depends on:

  • if it's the only card and the client has a plan, add another card first;
  • if it's the default card of a client with a plan, make another card the default first.

Good to know

  • Clients with portal access can add, remove and choose their own default card on their Plan page. See Change or cancel your plan.
  • If Stripe doesn't answer, the card says so instead of showing an empty list. Nothing has changed; try again in a moment.
  • You can't ask an archived client for a card.
