Turn client messaging on or off
Client messaging is on for every new workspace. It gives each client one conversation with your team, in your Inbox and in their portal.
Turn it on or off
Only the Owner (shown as Portal admin in the app for now) can change this.
- Go to Settings → Workspace → General.
- Tick or untick Client messaging.
- Click Save.

When it's off:
- Inbox disappears from your sidebar, for everybody.
- Messages disappears from every client's portal.
- No message emails or notifications are sent, including for messages written just before you switched it off.
Nothing is deleted. Turn it back on and the conversations are still there.
Decide who hears about a client's messages
Who gets told about a new message depends on who is assigned to the client:
- People assigned to the client are notified. Admins assign them from the top of the client's conversation. See The inbox.
- Nobody assigned? Every Admin and the Owner is notified instead, so no message goes unseen.
- Internal notes notify the same people, never the client.
- Your team's replies notify everyone at the client who has portal access, but not your other colleagues.
The person who wrote the message is never notified about it.
How notifications are paced
- Each message waits about a minute before anyone is emailed, so a quick burst of messages or an immediate correction doesn't send several emails, and a deleted message sends none.
- If you've already read the message by then, you get nothing.
- You get one email per conversation until you open it again. Phone and browser notifications keep coming for each new message, and replace one another rather than piling up.
